Meet Amanda: Colored Organic's Founder
October 15, 2019
/Tell us a little about yourself!
I am a mom, wife, friend, believer, traveler, sports fan, wine lover and foodie! I have been married for 13 years to my husband and best friend, Nick. I knew on our first date that he was the man I was going to marry and 3 months later we were engaged - crazy, I know! I LOVE being a mom, it is my favorite title and my best accomplishment. Don’t get me wrong it is the toughest thing I have ever done, but it brings me so much joy and fulfillment in life raising my two babes, Sienna & Reve.
How did Colored Organics start?
I was blessed to become a Mommy to my beautiful daughter 12 years ago. I wanted to dress her in organic clothing, but struggled to find organic baby clothes in colors! So, I had an idea to start a business screen-printing my designs on colored organic blanks, but could not find a supplier anywhere who offered organic products in a variety of colors. This was my “ah-ha” moment. I decided to start a business making organic baby blanks with my own designs but also to offer a variety of colors without a minimum purchase requirement so other like-minded mamas could easily start their own businesses.
How did you come up with the business name?
My husband Nick and I came up with the name “Colored Organics” after constantly saying these words over and over describing the business. It hit us in the face when we were like “what about Colored Organics?” It was such a common phrase for us that we didn’t even think to use it. Funny Fact: we were originally playing with the name Pajama Pile after folding a basket of clothes together. That lasted for a few days and I am pretty happy with the change.
Why did you decide to produce your products in India?
I knew that if I was going to start a company manufacturing clothes it had to be produced in an ethical and honest way. We’ve heard the horror stories about child labor and working conditions in other countries and I didn’t want that for our company. It took a few years of research to find the right fit for us. We are proud to have partners that share the same values and morals. All of our factories provide meals, transportation, health benefits, and 8 hour capped work days for their employees.
How is Colored Organics different today from when you started?
A lot has changed over 12 years of running this company. Originally, we only offered our products to resellers until we launched our retail website in 2015. All of our products were stored in our basement and order fulfillment, customer service, operations were all handled at our house. My children were little and at home with me during this time so it was a constant juggle between taking care of them and handing the everyday operations. Funny story: I remember when Target was interested in carrying our products on Target.com and I was on the phone with the buyers locked in a closet praying my kids were okay and did not come in screaming. Our company continued to grow and in 2016 it was time to move the business out of the basement.
Why is it important to you to have a give-back initiative every month?
It is our mission to do everything we can to help make an impact in the lives of children. I personally believe it is important to help others and to always be kind. It takes a village to raise children and we believe that with continued support from our customers we can make a difference in the lives of children in need.
Favorite part of what you do?
I get to work with my awesome team every day! Our company wouldn’t be where it is today if it weren’t for our great crew. Also, we get to involve our children in discussions about our business and the challenges that we face and how we overcome them. I know they are soaking in a lot of information, but they are learning a lot of important skills along the way. My daughter was my inspiration in founding this company, my hope is that she sees what it has become and believes she can achieve anything she puts her mind to. One day, I hope to repay the favor and be her inspiration for something great.
What brings you joy? What does self-care look like for you?
My family and Travel! Whether it is sitting at a ball field, freezing in an ice rink or snuggling on the couch to a movie, being with my family is what feeds my soul. Traveling with my family is my therapy and its what energizes me. I love to explore new places and experience new cultures. I think it’s healthy to break out of routine, go on an adventure, and make memories with the ones you love!
If you had any advice for an expecting mother, what would it be?
I know this is pretty cliche, but it is so true!: Enjoy every moment - it goes by too fast. Take lots of photos and videos, because you will cherish those forever!
Make time for yourself! Taking care of yourself doesn’t only benefit you - it benefits your child(ren), marriage and family.
Don’t put pressure on yourself. You will be a great mom and don’t compare yourself nor your kids to others. Everyone is different and that okay!
