CO Featured Mom: Meet Emily

 /

Motherhood is a journey as unique as you are, so it can often feel like you're doing it alone. Here at Colored Organics, we love to unite you together, even if it's only virtually, to share some wisdom and camaraderie on the rollercoaster journey of parenting. We are so excited to share some motherhood insights from Michigan-based mama, Emily!

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF!

My name is Emily, I am 32 years old and from the mitten. I married my amazing husband in 2017 and since we have added three beautiful children to our family! Eleanore is 5, Sullivan is 3 and Fletcher is 8 months. I am an L&D RN and do photography as well. My favorite is when my two worlds collide and I get to photograph births or fresh 48 sessions. There is nothing more magical than birth and the first euphoric days after. I also love sharing our family on social media, finding other moms to relate to, and having these memories documented to look back on!

WHAT'S THE MOST REWARDING PART OF BEING A PARENT?

I love watching my children grow and become their own little people. It is the slowest and most rewarding heartbreak to let go of the old versions of them to make room for the new ones, but it is amazing watching them come into their own. Watching them develop their preferences, personalities, quirks, and passions is amazing. Knowing you are raising kind, little humans that will go out and take on the world is so humbling and fulfilling!

WHAT IS THE MOST SURPRISING THING ABOUT PARENTHOOD?

The amount of grace you will learn to give to and ask from your kids! I always expected to be ready to be patient and show grace to my children, allowing them to make mistakes and grow, but I didn’t realize how often I would be asking the same from them. I think it’s very important to let our kids know we are human, to ask for forgiveness when we could have handled a situation better, and to ask for grace when needed! Modeling the behaviors we hope they will have when it comes to compassion and empathy really matters. We are learning and growing together and that is such a beautiful, powerful thing!

WHAT DOES SELF-CARE LOOK LIKE TO YOU?

Self-care to me is reading! I love at night when my kids are in bed to get lost in a novel, preferably fantasy, and just have time to put the chaos of life on pause and enjoy another reality! I also love reading to my kids and hope they develop the love for books I have and share a bond through them!

WHAT CHORE WOULD YOU FOREVER OUTSOURCE?

LAUNDRY. Hands down. Without a question. Without a doubt! It always amazes me how much laundry little people create! and the SOCKS! So many socks to match. I joke that it takes me 7-10 business days to take care of a load because I rarely wash, fold, and put away laundry in one day. I love clothes, so we have a lot (too much if you ask my husband) and so getting even a day behind is overwhelming!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF COLORED ORGANICS?

EVERYTHING! lol but truly if I had to pick one, it would be the quality! When buying clothes for the kids I always think about the sustainability of the clothing and it's ability to stand up to daily wear and be passed down! Sullivan had several items that were passed down to Fletch that still look brand new! The timeless feel and quality of their pieces are amazing.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO AN EXPECTING MAMA?

Congrats! Your life is about to change in the best and most consuming way possible! The only thing that matters in the fourth trimester is to slow down and just be together. Lean into it and all the wonderment and beauty it holds. It is hard and you are healing, so show yourself grace now and throughout your whole motherhood journey. Trust your instincts and feel confident in your decisions, knowing what is best for you both. Soak in each snuggle and night feed because tomorrow they will wake up a day older and bigger. The housework will wait but the growing won't. Let go of any expectations or comparisons and just enjoy your baby and the absolute perfection they are. YOU are doing amazing and hard work and I am so proud of you.
